Some people out there think they are entitled to just take what they want.  They have twisted the theory of survival of the fittest.  I have some ideas as to what to do with these people.  Don’t let me catch someone trying to steal my gas.

Unfortunately, with the economy being the way it is right now and the fact that gas prices are above $3.50 per gallon, more and more people are stealing gas.

Protect you gas by purchasing a locking gas cap.  I’ve had one ever since gas prices hit $2.00 per gallon years ago.  At the time, locking gas caps were selling like hot cakes and I could not find the right model for my car.  I ended up buying it online.

By the way, I know I wrote about this before, but I thought the subject needed to be reitterated.

You will probably have a hard time believing this, but there is virtually no difference in gas mileage between driving your pickup truck with the tailgate up and down.  Evidently, when you drive along, a bubble of stagnant air forms in the bed, allowing the air to flow over it as if it were part of the truck.  With the bed down, the bubble is gone and resistance is increased.

Save money on education

With the economy in flux and the future uncertain, many people are looking for creative ways to save money on education. One approach people are using is to stay closer to home, when attending college. The money-saving part is to attend community college instead of going across the country to attend a four-year institution.

Community colleges are typically cheaper than four-year institutions. Also, if the student does not leave the house to leave in a dorm on campus, they can save money on food, rent, etc. Of course, this will cost the parents more, but most parents feel better about having their children close.

Taking classes online is another way of saving money. Schools like Strayer university Online and University of Phoenix are two big online schools. I took 2 online courses from Strayer University Online and I found the experience to fit into my busy lifestyle very well. Going to school online saves on gas, food, tuition, etc.

There is plenty of proof, on the Internet and otherwise, proving that if you slow down, you will save gas. I know for a fact that this one is tough to do…at least on a consistent basis. Us Americans run ourselves ragged from the beginning of the week to the end. I am always running late, which precludes driving slower. My typical speed is 5-10 mph over the speed limit (sorry mom…it’s true).

The amount of air pressure in your tires can be in direct proportion to the amount of money in your wallet. If you let your tire pressure get low, your gas mileage will go down and your tire wear will increase. Keep your tires inflated to the manufacturers suggested pressure. That pressure can be found on the edge of the driver side door of your vehicle (or on the Internet).

I’m sure you’ve read this one before. Oh yeah…I blogged about it earlier this year. On my way home from work that day, I checked my tire pressure and found that all of the tires were perfect, except for 1, which was over-inflated.

If someone steals from me, they are also stealing from my daughters.  I will not stand by and allow THAT to happen.

Back when the gas prices went about $2.00 a gallon, a friend of mine and I decided that we should protect the gas we have in the tanks of our cars by getting locking gas caps.  I believe he was able to get his here in town, however, I ended up having to order mine online.

I’ve had my locking gas cap ever since and have only had 1 occasion when I went to get gas, but did not have the key with me.  Sure, it’s a little bit of an inconvenience, however, having someone drain your tank is more of an inconvenience.

I’ll take the trade off…

I was looking for the manufacturers estimated gas mileage for my case and I found this great site that I thought you should know about.  It’s called fueleconomy.gov.  Not only did it have the specifics of my vehicle, it also contains videos on increasing your gas mileage, gasoline prices around the country, gas mileage tips, hybrid car information, diesel and bio-diesel information, and much more.  You can even compare fuel consumption and green-house gas emissions one vehicles side-by-side.  I think the site is great, but I have to wonder how many millions went to the government contractor that won that bid.

We’ve been talking about ways to spend less money for a while now.  I’ve decided to implement a new method of saving money that will actually address several issues.  I am going to get a cow.  I know what you are thinking.  “I want a cow.  How do I get one?”

A cow can address several money-saving issues, with the primary issue being our family’s milk supply.  We purchase/use a gallon of milk per week on average.  With milk currently at almost $3.00 per gallon, over a year, the savings is $156.  The cow will produce

The cow eats grass.  With all of the rain the midwest has received over the past few months, I’ve got plenty of grass.  I do not, however, have a lawn mower.  Having a cow will mean I will not have to spend the money on purchasing a lawn mower.

I am planning on growing a garden.  What is needed to help grow a garden?  Fertilizer.  Cow poop is a great fertilizer.  It’s rich in nitrogen, which helps plans grow.  The cow will provide plenty of that.  It’s like a Circle of Life thing going on in my own back yard.

Maybe I can even trade some of the extra milk for something else that I need, in order to save even more money.

If your check engine light comes on, have your engine checked as soon as possible.  The check engine light usually comes on in response to a problem in the emissions system of your car.  A problem in this system means that your engine is not working as efficiently as possible, therefore, you are wasting gas.   Wasting gas means you are wasting money.

Gas Credit Cards are meant for saving money, keeping in view the high gas prices. You have a variety of cards to choose from, and each one has a different offer. These cards offer you a rebate up to 5% on purchase of gas and also other items like grocery. The rebate is lower in the case of purchase of items other than gas. When you have earned cash back of $50 all you have to do is obtain the check from your credit card issuer.

Certain Gas Credit Cards offer comparatively higher rebates on hotel reservations and travel including flights and car, and also double rewards for the initial bills. Certain other credit cards have come up with innovative ideas like rebate on purchase of automotive parts, no interest on purchases for a certain number of days after the billing date etc. Though you are on the look out for such incentives you should be sure if you are actually going to use them, and are not going to incur loss for the kind of rewards you do not actually require.

There is ambiguity regarding any introductory offer, and before taking a decision you should pay special attention to the fine print. Because of the stiff competition in credit card business the companies are always on the look out for innovative methods to attract customers. As gas is something everyone buys, teaming up with a gas company means better business. On the other hand the gas companies themselves offer credit cards which can be used at only those gas stations. Rebates are offered for purchase of gas and items on sale at the particular gas station. Sole gas station credit cards generally offer more discounts, and in case of a gas station in your neighborhood it is a good idea, unless you are going on a trip and you run out of gas. Other advantages of using these cards besides the rebate is that you need not carry cash and expenditure on gas will not be mixed up with regular expenditure.

If you are particular about monitoring the expenditure on gas these cards offer monthly statements with list of purchase. Like other credit cards you may watch out for annual fee or other hidden charges in case of the Gas Credit Cards too.

Cut back to one car. Most cars on the road contain one drive. This is a very inefficient use of fuel. If your family has more than one vehicle, why not cut back to one (if you have two)? With a little planning, you will see how much you can save on fuel, maintenance, car payments, etc.

With the high price of fuel these days, everyone is doing everything they can to reduce their consumption of fuel.  As of today, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded is $4.00/avg.  Driving less is one option and carpooling is another.  One way to kill two birds is to walk.  Walk to work.  Walk to school.  Walk to the store.  If you live within a reasonable distance of these places…WALK!!!  Not only will you save on gas, you will be exercising also.

If I lived close enough to where I work, I would too.  At one point in my life, I lived close enough to work to walk, and I did.  It took me about 18 minutes to walk what took 2 minutes to drive.  The close proximity of my job and my house came in handy when my car broke down.  I just walked home, then walked to work the next day.  No big deal.
