If you’re like just about everyone else these days, you’re looking for ways to save money. You don’t necessarily want to give up your vacation or stay at home for one of those pretend “stay-cations” though. Fortunately, there are still ways to take a trip somewhere exotic without breaking the bank. Believe it or not, a cruise can be a very affordable vacation… if you know how to do it!

Save Money on Booking Your Cruise

You should never ever, ever pay the brochure price for a cruise. If you do your research, you can save a lot of money. My mom and I are about to take a 7-day cruise to Mexico, and we are paying less than $250 per person. That includes 7 nights of lodging on the ship, all our meals, and all sorts of free entertainment, in addition to the excitement of traveling to a warm climate and escaping our rainy Pacific Northwest winter.

There are two key times when you can save money when booking a cruise:

Book very early or book very late.

When a cruise is first scheduled (a year or more in advance), you can save money by booking right away. The cruise lines like to get cabins booked as soon as possible and reward those willing to sign up early.

You can also get awesome deals by booking “last minute” cruises, which is what my mom and I did. When the sailing date is only a month or so out, the prices start dropping a lot. Cruise lines don’t make any money off of empty cabins, so they will drop their prices drastically to get bodies in those rooms. After all, they know people are likely to spend on some extras during the cruise, so they can take the loss when it comes to accommodations. (Don’t worry-we’ll talk about those extras and which ones you might want to avoid to save money.)

Save Money by Cruising Close to Home

If you’re lucky enough to live near a port where cruise ships depart, you can save a lot of money by avoiding airfare.

In the United States, lots of cruises leave out of the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area. These cruises typically swirl around the Caribbean Islands and the east side of Mexico and sometimes visit other countries on the east side of Central America.

Also, the San Diego/Los Angeles area features a lot of cruises to the Mexican Riviera (the Pacific Coast side of Mexico).

If you don’t live in California or Florida, you can still save money on airfare by picking the closer of the major ports. For instance, west coasters might want to take a Hawaii cruise leaving from Los Angeles while east coasters might want to do the Caribbean.

After spending about 15 minutes in the store, I walked out with 4 shirts for $15 (1 was $6 and the others were $3). As soon as I got home, I dropped the shirts in the wash and after drying them I ironed them all. It was at this time that I noticed a stain on one of the shirts. It was faint, but I figured a little Shout could get it out. No go on that, so I soaked and scrubbed that spot. I’ll let you know if the spot comes out.

The shirts all look good. I spent $15 for 4 shirts when I would have spent that amount on 1 shirt if Value City had been on the way home instead of Goodwill. I’ll go back either to that Goodwill in a couple of months to get more shirts, or I’ll go to another Goodwill this weekend. Another good thing about Goodwill is that you can be 100% assured that each location has a different inventory.

P.S. Of the 4 shirts, 3 are recognizable brand names. That’s just in case you are hung up on status. No one has to know where the clothes came from.

Prescription costs are high these days so here are some ways to save money on prescriptions:

1. Shop around – You may have to give up a little loyalty to your pharmacy if you want to save some money.  A lot of pharmacies have deals if you transfer.  They tend to offer gift cards of $5, $10, $20, or more.
2. Check price – Yes, the cost of a prescription can vary from place to place.  Check around to find out the true cost.
3. Get generic scripts – Make sure your doctor has checked the “substitutions allowed” box on your prescription.  Sometimes, doctors over look this and if the doctor does not have a specific reason for having you take the name brand, you want to make sure you are taking the generic.
4. Get it for free – There are grocery stores that are offering free generic prescriptions.  They do this to get you into the store, but the benefit is still good.
5. Ask for samples – The drug companies have reps that go from doctor’s office to doctor’s office trying to get them to push their medications.  As an incentive, they give the doctor’s office samples.  Sometimes, the doctors don’t even thing to give out the samples and they end up being taking by the office staff.  Ask the doctor to give you samples.

I am a member of the Freecycle group in St. Louis, MO. I was watching the posts today, and a post entitled “OFFER: Power lawn mower, 63130″. When I contacted the person, they told me “Yard Machine power mower with 4 horse power engine, about 8 years old. Won’t start. Needs work.” I decided to take it because I was the first person to respond, I know someone who works on mowers, and I need a mower.

A new mower like this would normally run around $150. A used one in good condition would, by my guess, be about $60-$80. The mower was free and I spent $15.70 (w/tax) on the tune-up parts. My net gain was between $44.30-$64.30.

I could turn around and sell the mower for $80, but I need one so I’m keeping it. This experience has made me think that I could probably do this again and get another mower to sell.

When was the last time you went to a garage sale?  It’s been a while for me, because of finances, but I still think they are a treasure-trove of bargains.  Just think.  10 books for $1.00, a lawn mower for $15, and even a computer for $25.  Every time I go, it’s an adventure.  I know people that used to go every week.

Right now, what I need are summer clothes for my 10 year old and 7 year old girls.  I will soon start visiting garage sales.  If you can catch a subdivision garage sale, that’s even better because you have multiple opportunities and you don’t have to drive very far between them.

I would suggest making a list of the things you really want to get, then strike out early on a Saturday morning.  The bargains are waiting.
