I was surfing along when I came across a post about Sam’s Club pricing. The person said that is the last digit of the price was a 1 (one), the item had been marked down and was being sold below cost. I did a little digging and I was able to find several other posts talking about the same thing.

Saving Money on a Cruise

I was thinking about taking my daughters on a cruise next year, so I thought I’d publish some information on saving money on a cruise.

If you’re like just about everyone else these days, you’re looking for ways to save money. You don’t necessarily want to give up your vacation or stay at home for one of those pretend “stay-cations” though. Fortunately, there are still ways to take a trip somewhere exotic without breaking the bank. Believe it or not, a cruise can be a very affordable vacation… if you know how to do it!

Save Money on Booking Your Cruise

You should never ever, ever pay the brochure price for a cruise. If you do your research, you can save a lot of money. My mom and I are about to take a 7-day cruise to Mexico, and we are paying less than $250 per person. That includes 7 nights of lodging on the ship, all our meals, and all sorts of free entertainment, in addition to the excitement of traveling to a warm climate and escaping our rainy Pacific Northwest winter.

There are two key times when you can save money when booking a cruise:

Book very early or book very late.

When a cruise is first scheduled (a year or more in advance), you can save money by booking right away. The cruise lines like to get cabins booked as soon as possible and reward those willing to sign up early.

You can also get awesome deals by booking “last minute” cruises, which is what my mom and I did. When the sailing date is only a month or so out, the prices start dropping a lot. Cruise lines don’t make any money off of empty cabins, so they will drop their prices drastically to get bodies in those rooms. After all, they know people are likely to spend on some extras during the cruise, so they can take the loss when it comes to accommodations. (Don’t worry-we’ll talk about those extras and which ones you might want to avoid to save money.)

Save Money by Cruising Close to Home

If you’re lucky enough to live near a port where cruise ships depart, you can save a lot of money by avoiding airfare.

In the United States, lots of cruises leave out of the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area. These cruises typically swirl around the Caribbean Islands and the east side of Mexico and sometimes visit other countries on the east side of Central America.

Also, the San Diego/Los Angeles area features a lot of cruises to the Mexican Riviera (the Pacific Coast side of Mexico).

If you don’t live in California or Florida, you can still save money on airfare by picking the closer of the major ports. For instance, west coasters might want to take a Hawaii cruise leaving from Los Angeles while east coasters might want to do the Caribbean.

Save Money by Being Frugal on Board the Cruise Ship

You don’t want to spend a lot of time and energy on saving money booking your vacation only to run up the credit card onboard. Some of the extras that you will pay for on a cruise ship include alcoholic beverages, sodas (for frequent soda drinkers, save money by buying an unlimited soda card), shore excursions, “alternative restaurants,” and shopping at the onboard mall.

You probably want to enjoy some of the activities, but know that you can have a great time simply lounging by the pool, eating at the buffet or free restaurants, enjoying the onboard entertainment options, and going ashore to explore on your own instead of booking expensive shore excursions.

Also, check the balance often on your room card (which is used like a charge card aboard the ship) to make sure you’re not spending more than you want to. It’s easy to lose track when you’re simply swiping to pay everywhere you go.

Okay, that’s it for my recommendations on saving money on a cruise vacation. Do some research on your own, and you’ll likely find that a cruise, even with extras, gives you a great vacation for your money. Remember that room, unlimited food, transportation to various ports, and entertainment are all included in the cruise price!

We all like to dine out. We dine out for the delicious food, but more importantly, for the experience and the fun time to be with friends and families. However, dining out can be expensive, especially now when the restaurant prices keep going up and up. Fortunately, there are many ways you can get restaurant discount coupons online and offline, so you can save on your restaurant expenses by simply doing a little planning ahead.

1. Newspaper ads.

This one is obvious. When you open your Sunday newspaper, you will find tons of restaurant discount coupons. Many ads have more than one coupon for each restaurant as well. Most of them have expiration date. Therefore, be sure to use the coupons before they expire.

2. ValPak

I received Valpak once a month by mail. Once in a while I find some new restaurants advertise in Valpak. The good thing about Valpak is they only advertise local stores. If you want to find a new restaurant in your neighborhood, try looking in the stacks of Valpak coupons to see anything look interesting to you.

3. The back of your local supermarket receipts

Next time you go shopping at your local Safeway, Albertsons, or any big supermarkets, make sure to check the back of your receipts. Many restaurants advertise on local supermarket receipts with coupons to attract local customers. I always find Subway coupons at the back of my local Safeway supermarkets. There are a lot of car wash coupons at the back of supermarket receipts as well.

4. Sign up for restaurant mailing lists

Many large restaurant chains now have dining clubs that give out coupons or discount codes to their members. For example, I belong to Sweet Tomatoes’ “veg club.” They send me discount coupons for my birthday through email, and I can use the same coupon for a period of time. Some large chains also give restaurant discount coupons for holiday specials exclusive to their mailing list members. If you do not mind getting some promotional email once in a while, joining a restaurant mailing list is not a bad idea.

5. Take customer satisfaction surveys

Many large restaurant chains give incentive for their customers to fill out customer satisfaction surveys. Usually you call a phone number and answer several questions to give them opinion on how satisfied you are with their services. The restaurants usually give you a discount code for your next visit. I have done it for Fresh Choice and some other restaurants many times. Some restaurants let you enter a drawing instead of giving out restaurant discount coupons. I usually do not bother with that unless I am really not satisfied with the service. Sometimes the restaurant staff do not tell you about the surveys. So be sure to check your receipts for instructions of how to do so.

With these 5 free ways to find restaurant discount coupons, you can enjoy the experience of dining out without breaking the bank. Little bit of looking around and planning can save you a lot of money.

In case you’re wondering, yes, there is still such a thing as cheap dental care, if you know what you’re looking for and you’re willing to think “outside the box”. Everyone knows about dental insurance because insurance in general is what most people usually look for when they’re in need of some type of coverage. However, in this case, dental insurance is not necessarily the best cheap dental care option available to you. Let me explain why.

Dental insurance does not immediately cover pre-existing conditions. This means that if you are suffering from tooth pain or need to have an abscessed tooth pulled right away that you’ll have to pay for all of it yourself. Dental insurance plans require a waiting period of usually one year before they’ll begin providing coverage for any type of existing conditions. Even then they may not cover 100% of the cost.

If you think about it for a moment, this really makes complete sense. If you go and get a new insurance policy on your vehicle they’re going to do an inspection of it and take pictures of any damage that was already there. Well, dental insurance is the same way. The insurance company doesn’t want to pay for problems that you had before yoschoou came to see them.

Your second option is called a Dental Discount Plan. This is a plan that you can join as an individual or family and receive big discounts by visiting dentists that have agreed to accept these plan members. You can save as much as 60% on routine dental care and also on major dental, such as dentures, root canals, bridge work and more. The only requirements for joining is paying a small fee, as low as $80 per year for an individual or $150 for an entire family, which is super cheap. You also must pay for your dental work in full at the time of your appointment.

Look at this example real quick. You could go in for a routine check-up, cleaning, x-rays and fluoride tooth sealant That would normally cost you around $260 and you’ll get it with membership for just $139 with one plan that I just looked at in the Tempe, Arizona area. This savings alone for one visit more than paid for an individual plan for a year. Just imagine the savings for any major dental work or the savings in the example above multiplied by a family of four.

These are the two main things that you have to choose from if you’re trying to find cheap dental care. One makes complete sense to me, while the other one doesn’t, but the choice, of course, is up to you.

In addition to those two options is the School of Dentistry option. A lot of schools that teach dentistry need live subjects for their students to practice on. Of course, the procedures being done at these schools on the public are not very complicated (cleanings, fillings, etc.).

Making certain purchases online can prove to be cheaper than making the same purchase in a store. The main thing that seems to be a problem for most people is having to wait to use whatever it is they are purchasing. People usually want things NOW.

You also have to decide if you want something NEW or if you can use something used. In a lot of cases, such as computer memory, electronic equipment, and books, used/refurbished is just as good as new. You can get a lot of things cheaper online from one of these used/refurbished item web sites:

Turn Your $600 Stimulus Check Into $2307

Pay on your mortgage. Are you wondering how that is going to turn that $600 check into $2200 (actually $2307.97)? If you have a great rate on your mortgage, let’s say 5%, assuming you have 27 years left to pay, your savings would be $2307.97. In order to do this, you will need to write a check to your mortgage company and indicate that the money you are paying should go entirely towards principal.

To calculate what you will save based on the specifics of your mortgage, do the following:

Get a calculator
Type in your mortgage interest rate in decimal form and divide it by 12. If you have a 5% rate, the decimal representation of that is .05. For an 8.25% rate, the decimal representation is .0825. Divide that by 12.
Add 1
That number should be taken to the power of the number of months left to pay on the mortgage multiplied by 12. An example is 1.0825^27*12 (27 years left * 12 to get months).
Multiply this number by the amount of your stimulus check.
The result is the amount of money you will save if you apply your stimulus check to the principal on your mortgage.

x = decimal of interest rate y = number of months left to pay on mortgage z = amount of stimulus check

(((x/12) + 1)^y*12)*z = savings
