Get the most from your old car

Want to get more from your old car than the dealer will give you on it for trade-in? Sell it yourself. 9 out of 10 times, you will get more by selling it yourself than the dealer will give you for it.

There is a caveat to selling the car yourself. You need to do some cleaning first. Who is going to want to buy your car with that Carter/Mondale bumper sticker on it or 3 years of Taco Bell wrappers in the back seat. Get to work in order to get the bucks:

  • vacuum the floors
  • give it a wash and wax
  • use Armor All on the tires and dash
  • remove the old bumper stickers. You can use a hair dryer to make the adhesive more pliable.
  • clean the engine (if you can’t do this, have someone do it for you)

Once you have the vehicle ready, use Kelly Blue Book or the NADA guide to set the price. There are online systems, like kbb.com that can help you set the price.
