The Windows 98 Guy
I have a friend who is still running a machine on Windows 98. I’ve talked with him about this and he never comes up with a real good reason why he is still on Windows 98.
He says that the software he has works on Windows 98 and he doesn’t want to risk the software not working on a newer operating systems. I have to wonder WHY he is using such antiquated software that it might not work on a newer O/S. I’m sure that there is either an upgrade, substitute, or replacement for any software he might have. I know he is using some sort of X10 application. I’m also pretty sure he is still using Lotus 123.
There is also a learning curve with usage of operating systems like XP and Vista. He has one machine that contains Windows XP, but I am not sure if he has tried all of his old software on XP. He also has a laptop with Vista, which he hates. He has even made the modifications to make Vista look like XP (I agree with this from a performance standpoint).
The latest upgrade issue had to do with QuickBooks. He was forced to upgrade because Intuit was no longer supporting QuickBooks 2005. He upgraded to QuickBooks 2006 and I pulled all of my hair out.

I can’t argue with the fact that he is saving money. He is the kind of person that does not like change. It makes for interesting discussions.
