Recycle Your Brita Water Filter

aquarium.jpg

I saw this one and had to post something about it. How about refilling your Brita water filters with activated charcoal from a pet store? Yep. I couldn’t believe it either. Evidently, for a lot less than the cost of a new water filter, you can modify your existing one (first time), then empty it and refill it with activated charcoal you can get from the pet store; the stuff that goes in the aquarium filter. There are some caveats to this refill procedure and the procedure applies specifically to Brita filters. If you are the do-it-yourself type, check out the details over on instructables.com.

Please sign the petition at http://www.takebackthefilter.org to urge Clorox, the maker of Brita filter cartridges, to redesign the cartridges so that they can be refilled and/or to develop a take-back/recycling system as they have in Europe.

We are collecting used Brita filters. Obviously, if you want to refill yours with activated carbon from the pet store, that’s fine. But there may be others who simply want a way to make sure they don’t end up in the landfill.

    Thanks for listening!

    Beth
